Respite Care for Caregivers in Southern California
Time to Rest While Your Loved One Remains Supported
Caring for someone with an advanced illness is a meaningful act of love, but it can also be physically and emotionally demanding. Serenity Hospice Care helps family caregivers take a temporary break while their loved one continues receiving attentive, comfort-focused support.
Based in Claremont, California, we serve eligible hospice patients and their caregivers throughout Los Angeles, San Bernardino, Orange, and Riverside counties.
What Is Hospice Respite Care?
Hospice respite care provides short-term relief when the person who normally cares for a hospice patient needs time to rest, manage personal responsibilities, or attend to their own health.
Formal respite care under the Medicare Hospice Benefit is generally provided through a temporary inpatient stay at an approved facility arranged by the hospice team. Routine hospice visits at home continue according to the patient’s care plan but are not the same as continuous in-home supervision.
Our coordinators can explain the available options and help determine which form of support is appropriate.
When Can Respite Care Help?
A family caregiver may benefit from respite care when they need to:
- Recover from physical or emotional exhaustion
- Attend medical appointments
- Manage an unexpected personal situation
- Spend time with other family members
- Take care of work or household responsibilities
- Rest and return to caregiving with renewed energy
Requesting help is not a sign of failure. Taking time to recharge can help caregivers protect their own well-being and continue supporting their loved one.
What Does Respite Care Include?
Short-Term Facility Placement
When approved and arranged by the hospice team, the patient may temporarily stay at a contracted inpatient hospice facility, hospital, or skilled nursing facility.
Continuity of the Care Plan
The receiving care team follows the established hospice plan, including appropriate medications, symptom management, personal care, and daily routines.
Nursing and Personal Support
During the respite stay, qualified professionals monitor the patient’s condition and provide assistance based on their clinical and personal care needs.
Coordination From Beginning to End
Serenity Hospice Care coordinates the respite arrangement, communicates with the facility, and prepares for the patient’s return home.
Respite Care Coverage
Eligible inpatient respite care may be covered under the Medicare Hospice Benefit when the hospice team determines that it is needed and makes the arrangements. Medicare may require a small copayment, while Medi-Cal and private insurance coverage can vary.
Formal Medicare inpatient respite care is provided on an occasional basis and is generally limited to five consecutive days at a time. Our coordinators can explain eligibility, availability, and possible costs before care begins. Medicare’s official hospice coverage guidance confirms that inpatient respite must be arranged by the hospice team and may involve limited cost sharing.
