Medicare and Insurance Coverage for Hospice Care
Understand Your Hospice Benefits and Coverage Options
Insurance questions can feel overwhelming when your family is also making important care decisions. Serenity Hospice Care helps patients and families understand hospice benefits through Medicare, Medi-Cal, Medicare Advantage, and private insurance plans.
Our admissions coordinators verify benefits, explain available coverage, and communicate with insurance providers. Based in Claremont, California, we assist families throughout Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, and San Bernardino counties.
What Does Medicare Cover?
The Medicare Hospice Benefit is available through Medicare Part A for eligible patients. A physician must certify that the patient has a life expectancy of six months or less if the illness is expected to follow its natural course. The patient must also choose comfort-focused hospice services instead of curative treatment for the qualifying illness.
Depending on the individualized care plan, covered services may include:
- Hospice physician services and nursing care
- Certified home health aide assistance
- Social worker and spiritual counselor services
- Pain and symptom management
- Hospice-related prescription medications
- Medical supplies and equipment
- Physical, occupational, or speech therapy when appropriate
- Short-term inpatient care
- Inpatient respite care
- Bereavement support for the family
Covered medications, supplies, and equipment must be related to the qualifying illness and arranged by the hospice team.
Are There Out-of-Pocket Costs?
Medicare-covered hospice care has no deductible. However, patients may still be responsible for:
- A copayment of up to $5 for each outpatient prescription for pain and symptom management
- Five percent of the Medicare-approved amount for inpatient respite care
- Medicare premiums
- Room and board in a nursing home or residential facility
- Services or treatments unrelated to the hospice diagnosis
- Care not arranged or approved by the hospice team.
The hospice provider must explain which items or services are not covered and why. Current coverage details are available from Medicare’s official hospice guidance.
Medi-Cal Hospice Coverage
Hospice is a covered optional benefit under Medi-Cal for qualifying recipients. A physician must certify that the patient has a life expectancy of six months or less. The patient or representative must voluntarily elect comfort-focused hospice care instead of curative services related to the qualifying illness.
Benefits and authorization requirements may vary between fee-for-service Medi-Cal and managed care plans. Our team can verify the patient’s coverage and explain the next steps. Additional program information is available from the California Department of Health Care Services.
Private Insurance and Medicare Advantage
Many private and employer-sponsored insurance policies include hospice benefits, but coverage, authorizations, provider networks, and possible costs vary by plan.
Patients enrolled in Medicare Advantage generally receive qualifying hospice coverage through Original Medicare, while their plan may continue covering healthcare services unrelated to the hospice diagnosis. We recommend verifying the details before services begin.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does choosing hospice cancel my Medicare coverage?

Yes. Hospice care is voluntary. A patient may revoke the hospice benefit and pursue curative treatment. Eligible patients may elect hospice again later.
Can I change hospice providers?
Yes. Medicare beneficiaries may change hospice providers, subject to applicable benefit-period rules and required documentation.
