What Is Hospice Care?

Hospice is a specialized form of healthcare that prioritizes comfort, dignity, and quality of life when curative treatment is no longer effective or desired. It helps manage pain and other symptoms while respecting the patient’s goals, values, and preferences.

At Serenity Hospice Care, we care for the whole person. Our interdisciplinary team addresses physical, emotional, social, and spiritual needs while also supporting relatives and caregivers.

When Should You Consider Hospice Care?

Signs that it may be time to discuss hospice include:

  • Frequent hospitalizations or emergency room visits
  • Increasing pain, breathlessness, or discomfort
  • Progressive weight loss, weakness, or reduced appetite
  • Difficulty bathing, dressing, walking, or eating
  • Recurrent infections or slow-healing wounds
  • Curative treatments that are no longer effective or desired
  • A physician’s assessment of an advanced illness

These signs do not determine eligibility on their own. A clinical assessment and physician certification are required. Our team can explain the process and help your family understand its options.

What Does Hospice Care Include?

Each patient receives an individualized care plan based on their diagnosis, symptoms, living situation, and wishes.

Pain and Symptom Management

Hospice physicians and nurses provide personalized support for pain, breathing difficulties, nausea, fatigue, anxiety, restlessness, and other symptoms.

Skilled Nursing and Personal Care

Nurses assess the patient, coordinate physician-directed care, and educate family caregivers. Certified home health aides assist with bathing, dressing, grooming, mobility, and personal hygiene.

Medications, Supplies, and Equipment

We coordinate hospice-related medications, supplies, and medical equipment as part of the care plan. Depending on the patient’s needs, this may include a hospital bed, oxygen equipment, mobility aids, or personal care supplies.

Emotional and Spiritual Support

Social workers and counselors offer emotional guidance, practical assistance, and connections to community resources. Non-denominational spiritual care is available in accordance with the patient’s beliefs and preferences.

Support Available 24/7

Patients and caregivers can contact our on-call team 24 hours a day, seven days a week for clinical guidance and additional assistance.
